There are more and more people gambling online nowadays. And why? Well, the answer is simple; it is easily accessible and suitable.
This study was carried out by Sally Gainsbury from Southern Cross University. It is the largest ever survey on online gamblers in Australia, which collected 6,680+ participants who responded to an online questionnaire.
Gainsbury said that the research helped to show that online gamblers are not addicts to start with but could develop dependence in the long run.
The most recurring problems for online gamblers are that their use of credit card or internet bank transfers made them deposit more.
Alex Blaszczynski, University of Sydney Psychology professor, who worked with Gainsbury on the study, said that even though internet gambling has been around for 20 years now, it is only throughout the recent years that we have seen a boom in that sector.
An interesting factor on this survey showed that online gamblers are not interested in knowing if the sites they are playing on are legal and where they are based. Blaszczynski commented that online players should be concerned about the sites they are dealing with as those could lead to security issues such as identity theft, fraud, etc.
15% of players feel online gambling to be addictive and the part of the population that is more affected would be young, single, uneducated and unemployed gamblers.
